Slow Food Detroit welcomes you to join us as we host our 1st Annual Know Your Farmer Know Your Food Fundraiser at the lovely Coach Insignia at the top of the Renaissance Center to benefit our resource fund for farmers and continuing education regarding the local and sustainable food movement.

Our guests will enjoy a wonderful array of delicious food prepared by area chefs and served to you directly from their Chef stations. You will stroll through the Coach Insignia atop the Reinaissance Center not only enjoying the wonderful food featuring locally grown fare, delcious wine, local beer and a signature cocktail, but you will be treated to sweeping views of the Detroit River and the City of Detroit. You will hear from some of our local farmers talk about their work and the importance of supporting them which is the main purpose of this fund.

We look forward to welcoming you on August 22, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. as we celebrate and support our farmers.

Slow Food Detroit

The Slow Food movement was founded in Italy in 1989 as an alternative to the fast food lifestyle. Now there are chapters all over the world. As a local Chapter, Slow Food Detroit is committed to creating dramatic and lasting change in our food system while protecting our planet.

Our commitment to families in the Detroit area stems from our belief in the right for all people to have access to fresh, sustainable and locally produced food and that the producers of our food should be treated with dignity and justly compensated for their labor.  Our mission focuses upon strengthening awareness of the connection between the food on our plates and the health of our planet. We are an all volunteer Board and a member driven organization.  Our members are involved in activities such as:

  • Raising public awareness, improving access and encouraging the enjoyment of foods that are local, seasonal and sustainably grown
  • Caring for the land and protecting biodiversity in Detroit and Metro Detroit communities today, as well as for future generations
  • Creating educational outreach programs within the Detroit and Metro Detroit community educating school children about regional cooking and our rich cultural heritages
  • Advocating for farmers and artisans who grow, produce, market, prepare and serve wholesome food

We celebrate our local food traditions and heritages through events such as rural and urban farm tours, wine tastings, brewery and wine dinners, and farm to school programs. We also hosted our Firstl Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Gala, held in August of 2010 to raise money for our ongoing Farmer and Educational Resource Fund. Additionally we promote and support good health and nutritious food through affiliations with local food networks and outreach programs such as EarthWorks, Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Chefs Move to Schools.
